My laboratory is interested in engineering multi-functional, bio-responsive polymers and exploring their applications in biomedicine. Looking into biology for guidance and inspiration, we extract design principles for constructing new and better polymeric biomaterials that are tailored for modulating specific biological processes. We use a variety of tools, including synthetic chemistry and protein engineering, to make polymers and nano-materials that are biologically compatible, target specific cells and tissues in the body, and change their properties in response to biological signals. In this talk, I will focus on our effort in designing polymers that recapitulate certain structural and functional features of viruses, and then discuss how these polymers can be used for enhancing the delivery of DNA vaccines to antigen-presenting cells, with the long-term goal of developing more effective immunotherapeutics for cancer and other diseases.
