报告内容摘要：
The push for bioengineering applications in musculoskeletal system came about through the introduction of endo-prostheses in the treatment of degenerative diseases, especially in the 1960s with the successful implantation of the Charnley’s hip prosthesis. Many research programmes were started to look at the design of the prostheses, including structural strength, durability of the biomaterials, fixation methods etc. To date musculoskeletal bioengineering is well established and it plays an important role in contributing to the understanding of disease process, treatment and management of orthopaedic problems. The impetus for research in the NUS Department of Orthopaedic Surgery has been based on clinical relevance, academic pursuit, and the persistent need for progress and development in healthcare. Recent development has blurred the boundaries of biological sciences and engineering, resulting in a move towards the integration of biology and engineering, thus creating greater research focus on mechanical loading response to cellular structures and its role in cell signalling pathways, ie Mechanobiology and Cell Mechanics. The integrative approach has also brought about greater emphasis in topics such as Functional Tissue Engineering. With these advances and changing landscape in orthopaedics research, it is crucial to engage the clinicians in order to maintain focus in its ultimate application. It is quite easy for bioengineers and scientists to embark on the quest for science and knowledge.
