Abstract:

Securing acess to near space environment is of strategic importance and several technical developments have been undertaken in order to ensure guarsnteed access to near space.
The presentation reports on the high altitude UAV (H-UAV) development undertaken by the Bureau of Aerospace Technology since 2012 as part of a larger research programme dealing with high speed and high altitude UAV development.

H-UAV can be deployed from an altitude of 25 to 35 km and can achieve a gliding range of 300-600 km. The speed regime at high altitude, using purely gliding capabilities, is around Mach 1.0

The guidance is achieved using inertial sensors with a proprietary algorithm that provides a high precision attitude and trajectory solution. The inertial attitude and trajectory solution obtained is augmented using GPS with the main difference compared to several commercial autopilots being that the GPS is only used when and if available.

H-UAV can be used for several applications such as:

- meteorological radiosonde recovery

- recovery of high altitude balloon payloads

- aerospace components testing

- study of the terminal area energy management (e.g.: TAEM for Spacerider)

- surveillance applications

Short-biography:

Florin Mingireanu graduated from Louisiana State University with BSc in Physics and Astronomy. During undergraduate studies he held a research fellowship at Caltech on numerical modelling and has designed and flown several high altitude experiments at NASA Scientific Balloon Facility and microgravity experiments on parabolic flights from the Shuttle Landing Facility at Cape Canaveral.
He is currently Romania's delegate at the European Space Agency on Programme Board Launchers dealing mainly with Ariane/Vega launchers and SpaceRider vehicle.
Florin Mingireanu current technical interests are in the fields of propulsion and flight dynamics.
His research team at the Bureau of Aerospace Technology (X-BAT) has undertaken various projects in the areas of rocket motor design, high altitude/high speed UAVs, guided missiles and lifting bodies. A selection of current undergoing projects at X-BAT is:
-development of 1-6 kN liquid rocket engine
-high speed and high altitude blended delta wing flight vehicle
-advanced guidance systems for high speed/high altitude operation.
